Today I drove my north Philadelphia middle school students to and from Baltimore for a squash match. On the way home, we start discussing World War II (one of them just read a book about it). Two of them had never heard of the Holocaust, so I had to try to explain that in simple terms. Then one says to me, “I read that Hitler won the Nobel Peace Prize. How did a guy like that win the Nobel Peace Prize?”
I spent the next ten minutes trying to explain, and finished it off with an Eddie Izzard quote:
“But he ended up in a ditch, covered in petrol, on fire. So, that’s fun.”
I felt that was appropriate.
I would appreciate it if things would stop exploding. I have family near West, you know. And I know plenty of people in Boston. I have enough to worry about without this going on.

About to leave to go visit my college for a few days. This weekend is going to be legen—wait for it….
Conversation with one of my sixth-grade students yesterday:
Student: “What’s your last name?”
I tell him.
S: “Oh! I didn’t know your last name started with a “W”—mine starts with an “O”!
Me: “It sure does!”
Pause.
….
S: “You should get married!”
Maybe it’s the sleep deprivation speaking, but going to graduate school for mythology seems like an excellent idea right now. I really enjoy reading and analyzing myths—why not continue to educate myself in that? It would essentially be a comprehensive humanities degree, and that’s what my undergraduate studies boil down to.
It probably requires more than one sleepless night’s consideration, but I think that my thought process hasn’t strayed too far from the realm of logic.
I definitely just rocked a hot vinyasa class. I feel great right now, and it wasn’t even that awkward that I was the only guy there. Yoga might become a regular thing for me.
“Criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot.”
I don’t normally post pictures of myself, but I’ve made an exception here because my identity is clearly safe.
